So professional are some of these tracks that they can literally be sent straight to the record company for final mastering.

This facility has led to a boom of both interest and creativity in the areas of music production. Many independent artists are now producing their own unique music independent of market-led forces. The development of the World Wide Web further enables them to upload their tracks to a potential audience of millions. The degree of freedom such producers now enjoy is clearly unparalleled.

One of the downsides to this freedom is a glut of available music with sometimes dubious quality. Previously, music had to attract the attention of a record label or a radio station to get heard. To do so, it probably had to be music of a high standard in terms of both its originality and its salability. Now anybody can post music online, even if they are just starting out. In some ways this can be useful, because feedback obtained from listeners enables a musician to make improvements. But it also means that there is a lot of bad music out there.

One of the biggest mistakes would-be producers make is believing that by carefully listening to and studying their genre, they can acquire all of the knowledge necessary to be a successful producer. This knowledge can certainly get them a long way toward that point. But sometimes it simply is not enough.

Producers need other kinds of knowledge, such as knowledge of how music works as a language. It is no good writing an effective bass line, lead, and pads, for example, if they are all in different keys. The result is chaotic and unpleasant to listen to. Yet this is a common mistake I hear over and over again. The student’s knowledge of the genre is unsurpassed, but the final result falls down because, in purely musical terms, the producer doesn’t really know what he is doing.

Beneath all of the enormously different styles of modern electronic music lie certain fundamentals of the musical language that are exactly the same no matter what kind of music you write. It is very important to acquire an understanding of these fundamentals if you are to develop as a music producer. Put simply, you need to know what you are doing with regard to the music that you are writing.

Writing Windows 7 Administrator’s Pocket Consultant was a lot of fun—and a lot of work. In April 2005, I received a telephone call from Humana Press Senior Editor, Harvey Kane, inquiring whether there might be a need for a book to be published concerning the different aspects of computer forensics. During a subsequent meeting to discuss the current state of available texts covering this topic, I noted to Mr. Kane that there were several excellent computer forensics books already published and readily available. Mr. Kane then inquired as to what were some of the commonalities and differences between those books. My response was that they all discussed computer forensics analysis in detail. (Indeed, the purpose of one in particular was to guide the individual to becoming a skilled computer forensics examiner.) Furthermore, I indicated that some of the books included topics such as different operating systems as well as chapters on evidence collection and processing. Still others dealt specifically with incident response. Mr. Kane then asked me two questions: “If a person wanted to pursue a areer in computer forensics, is there any one book currently available that provides an overview?” and if not, “If you were to write a book on computer forensics, what topics would you include in the book?” The meeting ended with Mr. Kane asking me to draft a scope document concerning a possible book on computer forensics.

Shortly thereafter, I attended a local Infragard meeting. The speaker’s topic for the meeting was incident response and the role that computer forensics can play in identifying the evidence of a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. After the presentation, a number of those present asked the speaker such questions as: “What training is necessary to become an examiner in this field?” “How and where can you obtain such training?” “Where can you get the software to investigate this type of crime?” “Does an information technology (IT) person have to be certified?” “How do I go about obtaining certification?” “What certifications are available?” “What are the legal issues involved in searching and seizing digital data?” “What education is necessary to be hired in the IT field?” “What happens if you have to testify in court?”

Over the past several years, I have been asked many of those same questions by high school and college students and other individuals interested in entering the computer forensics field. One question in particular stands out: “How and where does a person look to obtain the necessary information if he or she is thinking of a career in this field?” All of these questions exemplify how difficult it is at times to obtain necessary information to make career choices.

The new textbook, “Dermoscopy: An Illustrated Self-Assessment Guide” by Dr. Robert H. Johr and Prof. Wilhelm Stolz, is a welcome addition to the evolving world of dermoscopic knowledge. I have reviewed all of the images and the text and feel that the contributions are indeed unique. First of all, the exquisite nature of the photographic images deserves a comment. Also, the clarity of labeling for each image separates this text from all others I have seen. Specifically, all of the key features are isolated by means of circles, rectangles, asterisks, etc., and this clear demarcation has succeeded where many similar textbooks fail. Secondly, the questions, statements and the answer format draws the reader into the dialogue. You really cannot escape committing yourself to a diagnosis, or differential diagnosis, as you answer the questions and statements posed. I think these two unique aspects of the textbook serve the learning process in a very positive way.

I should also add that I am an unabashed enthusiast of dermoscopy. Although I presently confine my clinical practice to pediatric dermatology, until 7 years ago, I saw adults on a daily basis and evaluated all of their pigmented lesions with dermoscopy. I have been committed to learning the technique for the last 14 years. Most of that learning curve has involved discussions and teaching by Dr. Robert Johr. Early on, we saw patients with complex pigmentary disorders such as xeroderma pigmentosum and evaluated numerous lesions dermoscopically, helping to separate those lesions which deserved follow-up from those which deserved biopsy. To this day, I continue to use dermoscopy not only to evaluate pigmented lesions in children, but I also use it as an advanced “pocket magnifier”. Specifically, hair shaft disorders, scabies, questionable molluscum lesions, etc., are readily identified when separated out by means of dermoscopy. When I forget my dermascope or when I find it uncharged, I actually feel less qualified to evaluate my patients.

I firmly believe that dermoscopy should be taught as an essential skill in every residency program and that all practitioners should strive to learn this technique. I certainly learned it when I was in my mid 50s, hence, a mature dog can learn new tricks. I am still surprised by the fact that virtually all children referred to me for evaluation of pigmented lesions have not been viewed with dermoscopy by their referring dermatologists. This needs to change. This technique adds a dimension which clearly makes us better diagnosticians and better dermatologists. The book by Drs, Johr and Stolz will help us in this effort.

The initial idea for this book came from Dr. Li Bingxiang at Higher Education Press during an international symposium in beautiftil southern China. Unlike traditional textbooks on pain, she proposed I write a new book that included recent progress in the neurobiology of pain.

This idea revived my long-term interest in editing a book on molecular pain. A scenery view of the southern China.

There are at least four major reasons why I felt this book was necessary. First, there are only a few textbooks on pain available, and some of them are outdated.

Second, the existing pain textbooks mainly focus on basic animal research and the clinical treatment of pain. Due to space limitations and the breadth of the topic, coverage of basic neuroscience is not sufficient.

Third, molecular biologists are making rapid progress toward finding molecular and gene involvement in pain. This progress is visible in a number of ways: the gene-chip used in pharmaceutical companies; the increase in molecular biologists interested in pain; and the use of transgenic mice in pain research. These scientists must be brought together with pain scientists.

And finally, an integrative approach is becoming standard in pain research. New investigators in the field need to be trained in multiple aspects of neurobiology.

Pain is a major health concern and a growing field of research. Molecular biologists have made rapid progress in finding relationships between genetics and pain, and Molecular Pain is the first book specifically written to bring this research to doctors and pain scientists. Unlike traditional textbooks, this book utilizes basic neuroscience to explain the mechanisms of pain. This guide provides a set of tutorials designed to acquaint you with the various components of the SPSS system. You can work through the tutorials in sequence or turn to the topics for which you need additional information. The goal is to enable you to perform useful analyses on your data using SPSS.

This chapter will introduce you to the basic environment of SPSS and demonstrate a typical session. We will run SPSS, retrieve a previously defined SPSS data file, and then produce a simple statistical summary and a chart. In the process, you will learn the roles of the primary windows within SPSS and will see a few features that smooth the way when you are running analyses.

More detailed instruction about many of the topics touched upon in this chapter will follow in later chapters. Here, we hope to give you a basic framework for understanding and using SPSS.
